Yummy Trader Joe’s Find!!

Looking for a nice Tuesday night wine? Then you should check out Cocobon 2010 California Red Wine, which is exclusively at Trader Joe’s. It is around $7 and is very satisfying. In fact, I think it is even better the next day after it has gotten some air into it… if it lasts that long that is! It is a blend composed largely of Zinfandel (60% or so), and the grapes it is made from come from all over California. The best part is, being an ALL Things Livermore enthusiast, that it is vinted & bottled here in Livermore at the Cocobon Cellers, which is part of Underdog Wine Merchants. There is a large berry aroma on the nose and is very fruity, but is not overwhelming thanks to a slight tannin on the finish.  A very enjoyable mid-week or weekend, party pleaser-type wine.

Last weekend we enjoyed it with my home-made chili. I hope you enjoy them both too!

Teresa’s New Castle Chili

Yields: 8-10 servings

1 pound lean ground beef

1 bottle Newcastle Ale

3 cans kidney beans, drained

3 cans pinto beans, drained

1/2 cup to 1 cup water

1 white or yellow onion, diced

3 garlic cloves, crushed

1 small can tomato sauce

2 tablespoons chili powder

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon cumin

1 teaspoon oregano

1 teaspoon cocoa powder

1/2 teaspoon basil

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Toppings: shredded sharp cheddar cheese, cilantro and/or sliced scallions

1. Sauté onion and garlic in 2 tablespoons olive oil until soft.

2. Add beef and cook until browned, crumble.

3. Add beans and remaining ingredients. Partially cover and allow to simmer at least 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Can top with shredded sharp cheddar cheese, cilantro and/or sliced scallions.

Cook’s note: Goes well with side of corn bread. Reheats well and is good over white rice
